You Need To Read Before Bootstrapping Overseas
Where is the best place to bootstrap? You might expect I will say Chang Mai, Ho Hi Minh, or another location overseas. The answer will surprise you.
Where will I suggest you go? Nowhere. Stay home. I have lived overseas in multiple countries and contents. Some people are not made to live overseas. You may have seen some great pics of videos about bootstrapping overseas. What you don't see if the difficulty in dealing with the language barrier. The difficulty of finding a place and getting around. If you have lived overseas these things probably are not so hard but for some young kid going out their first time it is not a good idea.
The difficulties of living overseas are not the only reason not to move. The big reason people suggest you move overseas is the cost. It is cheaper to hire workers in other countries that is true. You do not have to go overseas though to hire them. You can easily hire overseas workers. The best workers and the ones you will be able to communicate with are on all the main sites that you can use here in the US.
The one situation that might make overseas cheaper is the cost of housing and other living expenses. If you can live with your family it is better to stay. If you are living on your own it might not be any cheaper. If you are from the US you won't find a place to live as cheap as the foreigners and you wouldn't want to live in it. Trust me I lived in what I called a Post-apocalyptic Soviet part of China. I live in the Ghetto in Ho Chi Minh. You don't want to do that.
Some people seem to think the option is Silicone Valley or overseas. You don't have to live in Silicone Valley. You can find a small place in many parts of the US just as cheap as you will probably spend in another country. There are other costs like food but those can balance out with lower local cost for things like name brand electronics. Even if you pay a bit more you are saving the cost of a plane ticket which is high to Asia if you are planning to go that way.
Finally if you stay in the US you will have the ability to at least get some part time work. In some countries you might be able to do that. Most likely teaching English will be the job you will get. I lived in Kiev and made more teaching English online than locally. Other countries are similar. I did teach English in Kiev because I wanted to socialize more with locals and it was a great opportunity. You could teach online overseas but you can do that locally.
The reality going overseas might not be what you are expecting. It might not save you the money you expect. There are situations where it might be good and we will talk about that another time.
